I’m positive towards 3D printing of food, although I’m leaning more against in-vitro production of it (at least if we’re talking about meat). There is real and active research on this topic, and promises to deliver pretty much what we eat today (e.g. red meat), but healthier because less healthy fats can omitted, and with a much better ecological footprint  on production (no need for all those farting cows taking up millions of acres).

I didn’t see a lot of discussions here on materials for the structure beyond steel, but since this particular topic is “Contemporary Skyscraper Construction”, it is interesting to note that PopSci writes about a move away from steel in e.g. the article “The Rise Of The Supertalls” from Feb. 2013.  A different challenge mentioned there, one that I suppose warrants its own thread, is that of elevators – both how speed and gravity taxes the bodies inside, and the physical limits of stuff like cables.

So although AR-cows sounds like a really great thing, I don’t see how it actually jives with improving, or banning, agriculture. True, you may get rid of those ugly fences, but the cows will still fart up the global temperature.  I have big hopes for in-vitro meat though. Home grown (or factory grown) meat that never actually lived their life as part of a bigger animal. Meat that can be made without the egregious costs on nature, meat that can be manufactured to be healthier.  They even got their own organization.
